Club submission to DOC regarding proposed rule changes for Fort Takapuna and North Head

Hi all,

See attached the submission that has been put forward on behalf of the club with regards to DOC's proposed plans to ban paragliding at Fort Takapuna and restrict our use of North Head.

A big thanks to John Walton for writing the initial drafts that formed the basis of this, and other, submissions.

I know a number of individual pilots have already out in their own submissions as well, which is great. If anyone else wishes to do so, please see Don's forum topic here for details.

Traversing the Southern Alps by paraglider - an evening with Tom de Dorlodot and Ferdinand Van Schelven

in

On Sunday 10 March we are very fortunate to have two top X-Alps athletes, Tom de Dorlodot and Ferdinand Van Schelven, give us a presentation on their recent 800km traverse of the Southern Alps from Te Anau to Nelson, which they undertook as part of their training for X-Alps 2013.

Tom will also be showing a documentary on his 2012 expedition to the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan, where he pioneered a 300km route through some of the most challenging alpine terrain on the planet.

Entry is free and friends are more than welcome to attend.

Airspace files updated

in

A new set of airspace files have been published on the Airspace Downloads page. These have been updated to the latest version of the CAA Airspace Navigation Register (15th Nov 2012).

In this release new formats have been added. In addition to FA5 and KML we now have OpenAir and GPX formats, so the files can be loaded into much broader range of devices.

Also, in addition to CTA, GAA and MBZ the files now include CTRs.

Before using, please take note of the disclaimer on the Airspace Project page. If you discover any issues with these files please add a comment here so that it can be resolved.

Cloudbase Google+ Community

in

The Club's Twitter feed is having some reliability issues so I've been looking for an alternative that will work better. Luckily Google have just released Google+ Communities which is just the right fit for our needs. So I have created a Community called Cloudbase Flying

This community is for all Paraglider and Hang Glider pilots in the Auckland region to plan flying trips. Let everyone know which sites you think will be working, organise car pooling and give a report when you get to the site. You can post your comments and recieve notifications via the web, email, smartphone or txt. Get in to the Google account settings to change your notification settings to make it work the way you need.

I will keep the current Twitter service running for a little while, but if the new community works OK I will eventually shut down the Twitter feed.

Spread the word because the more users we have the better it will work.
